We are a Cub cadet dealer and sell many compacts. The remotes are normally mounted at the rear of the tractor because that is the standard mounting location for almost all tractors. The remotes could be mounted at the front if new longer hydraulic hoses were made up from the valve to the remote couplers. The hyd valve gets its fluid supply from a hyd block on the side of the tractor that is intended for this purpose or to supply a loader. Details of connections to the block are described in the owners manual. Make sure your connections are correct before cranking the tractor possible damage to the hyd pump can happen if connections are made incorrectly.

We are a Case/IH dealer and the Cubs generally give few clutch problems due to the low hp vs the size of the clutch. I would suggest replacing the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bushing with new genuine Case /IH parts. My guess is you have broken springs in the pressure plate or a bad pilot bushing. You also need to look at the splines of the transmission input shaft these can get worn and not allow the disk to float properly. Also examine the shaft where it runs in the pilot bushing. If it is worn or galled it can also cause the problems you describe. If it is damaged the input shaft will need to be replaced. Also make sure there is free play in the clutch pedal after you put it all back together. We work on many Cubs and clutch problems in them are rare. I know exactly what the problem is. There is a restriction orfice that comes with the valve that must be installed for the power beyond to work properly. I am sure it came with the valve, many mechanics throw this piece away before they realize it is needed. Hopefully your man still has it. You better jump on the 140 deal with both feet. I have seen $5,000 offered and turned down twice on several one owner 140's in similar condition to what you describe. Just to set the record straight the Deere compacts in the X50, X55, X70, and X90 series were manufactured to JD specs by Yanmar in Japan. The 4100 compact is also built by Yanmar in Japan. The other models in the 4000 series are the first compacts Deere attemped to build and design themselves.

I am beginning to wonder if the problem is really the mower deck. What size mowing deck is this ? Has the tractor radiator been flow tested ? Has the cooling system been pressured checked? Has the temp gauge been tested against one of known calibration. Many temp gauges on compacts will indicate hot while in actuality the engine is still in the high end of the operating range. A mower deck poses a constant load to the tractor that is does not see when running with a loader. Run the tractor at full PTO speed leaving the tractor stationary. Does the overheating occur ? Is the fan slipping ? Is the fan installed correctly ? Does the gauge show hot or the radiator actually boiling over ? Just some questions maybe we can figure this one out.

You have identified the problem, low compression in one cylinder. We are a Case /IH dealer and rebuild several of these tractors every year. Your problem is low compression in one cylinder, more than likely it is a burned valve or sticking valve this is a very common problem in the C60 engine. These engines did not use hardened valve seats, and that is why they burn valves easily on unleaded gas. If you want to keep the tractor we would install hardened valve seats, and guides if needed, all new valves, and upgrade the pistons to the high compression aluminum type. The high compression pistons will add 2-3 HP to this engine it makes a noticable difference in power. We can supply the parts if needed. Contact:

Before you try anything, like a portapower think about where you are directing the force. If this thing is really stuck, the portapower can do serious damage to the internal gears or bearings in the PTO. Also if the portapower is put directly to the casting on the tractor, it may crack or punch a hole in the casting if it is the weakest point. When you start applying lots of force thought is required, because the weakest point will give and that may not be what you you are trying to get off. A good run of thumb on PTO shafts is that they must install by hand force only. If they won't find out why.

In addition to being a dealer, I have used Bush Hog equipment on my own farm for over fifteen years. I know from experience what works and what doesn't because I've been there and done it. In addition I have a professional engineering license from the state of South Carolina so I think am qualified to evaluate the physics of the situation. In addition to compact tractors, we sell rotary cutters to right of way cutters, local and state government agencies, if I didn't know what I was talking about I don't think these people would buy from us. By your own admission your tractor experience is very limited. Anyone can sell anything in this country, that doesn't make it safe,right or legal. You will not find chain toplinks for sale in our dealership. If you think a chain is better by all means use it, but you are aware of the potential safety and equipment problems involved. Unfortunately even after a warning alot of people still sue when accidents happen or expect warranty repairs when their equipment is damaged due to their own negligence. If you have a statement in writing from Bush Hog on this I'd like to see it published.

You don't say what size tree or what size tractor you are planning to use, but from the sounds of it this has all the makings for "An America's Funniest Home Video" segment. 5/16" chain is a joke if you are trying to drag logs. The chain can and will snap back if it is under enough tension. (the stored energy in the chain has to go somewhere) In all likely hood if the tree is large and the tractor is small and the traction is good a broken chain or a tractor wheelie will be the result. Cut the tree up in small pieces and then drag out the small pieces. This will proably be much safer.

We are a Bush Hog dealer. Exactly what model Bush Hog did you buy? I am assuming it was used since it did not come with a PTO shaft. A rotary cutter generally does not use a 1 3/8 six spine on both ends since the cutter needs to have shear bolt or slip clutch protection in the driveline. There are some metric drivelines that Bush Hog uses that have 6 spines on both ends, but there is a special built in shear bolt arrangement in the shaft. This is only used on a few models in current production. This is the type of shaft you must have otherwise there is no driveline, cutter, or tractor protection. The horsepower of the tractor and the size of the cutter dictate the size of the driveline needed. Almost all Bush Hog drivelines are metric in current production models. Let us know what model and serial # you have and we can supply you with the correct Bush Hog driveline.

I don't know exactly what kind of spreader you are looking at, but if it is a 3pt hitch PTO driven type, we sell a 550 lb capacity for $349.00 plus freight. Cosmo is an Italian made spreader, most spreaders are made in Itay and are decent quality. They will last ten years IF you wash and clean then after EACH use very throughly. Fertilizer is more corrosive than salt water. Let us know if we can help

Any pressure build up on either side of a quick disconnect hydraulic fitting will make it almost impossible to reconnect. Sometimes cracking the quick disconnect loose from a hose is the only way. When the loader is detached, shut the tractor off and move the loader controls for lift and bucket in all directions to relieve pressure on all lines before disconnection. This will remove pressure on the loader side of the fittings. Make sure the loader is firmly parked and will not move once it is disconnected. If it moves after disconnection considerable pressure can be built up in the lines making them difficult to connect. The suggestions about cycling the loader control on the tractor prior to reconnection is a very good idea also.

Do NOT tow a tractor for 8 miles. You don't say what make or model this is, but serious damage can result from towing a tractor these kinds of distances due to lack of lubrication, overspeed etc. If you are that concerned about towing a trailer, I can't see how towing a tractor would be much better. If a trailer is a problem, just drive the tractor the eight miles down the road, it will be much safer for you and the tractor

Before you jump into a 3pt tencher make sure your tractor has the following specs:

MINIMUM Horsepower 25 30hp or more is prefered
Your tractor also MUST be a hydro drive so you can go slow enough to trench without bogging.

We also sell trenchers, and know from experience that if you do not have a tractor that meets the above specs, you will not be happy with the performance of the machine.

As a tractor dealer this clearly looks like a case of overheating to me. Overheating a diesel will very often cause RPMs to drop. Water in the fuel no way. A tractor that is worked hard for a period and then backed off should quickly (5-10) minutes recover to normal temperature levels. If this doesn't happen the cooling system is compromised in some way. Plugged radiator either internal or external, blown head gasket, or a cracked head. Loader work and box blade work generally provides very little load so will not generate excessive engine heat. A Bush Hog or Finish mower in tall grass in a high gear is a good way to load a compact for a period of time if a tractor dyno is not available. You need to get to the bottom of this before the weather gets real hot.

Howse = Cheap Now - Expensive parts later. Howse is an ok cheap cutter, but be aware of several things about their rotary cutters. Their cutter uses a very unusual U-joint in the driveline that is unavailable anywhere except a Howse dealer and costs about 2-3 times as much as one in a standard driveline. Parts are usually a little more difficult to find then say for Bush Hog brand equipment. We used to sell their (Howse) stuff, but have found when you explain it properly most folks will pay a little bit more to get the better quality in Genuine Bush Hog. Your 2wd tractor will work fine for what you want to do. You might want to add cast iron or liquid ballast to your rear tires to gain additional traction. While 4wd tractors are very useful, and in certain applictions are more effective they are by no means to only thing that will work. Like many other things in America there is a perception that if 2wd is good 4wd is better. You can see this in the SUV and pickup truck market today. Most 4wd vehicles sold are never used in 4wd. 4wd tractors are much the same way many are never used 4wd, and the owner could have saved money buying a 2wd tractor.
